Most people who contact us are not asking which therapy is best; they are trying to figure out where to begin. Understanding the levels of addiction treatment can make that first step less overwhelming, since each level is designed for a specific clinical need, living situation, and stage of recovery. This article explains detox, residential care, PHP, IOP, and aftercare, and how the appropriate starting point is determined.

 Detox: stabilizing the body first

For many people, detox is the first stage of treatment. When the body has become dependent on a substance, stopping use gives it time to restore its natural balance. Medical supervision is essential during this process, especially because substances such as alcohol and benzodiazepines can cause seizures or life-threatening complications if stopped suddenly. Our drug and alcohol detox program is overseen by our medical director, nurse practitioner, licensed nurses, and trained technicians. Clients stay in private rooms with 24/7 monitoring and may receive comfort medications when clinically appropriate, along with hydration, nutrition, and gentle movement.

Residential care: stabilization and assessment

Our residential program follows a detox, stabilization, assessment, and referral model. Stabilization means more than being substance-free; it means sleeping again, thinking clearly, and feeling safe in your body as therapy begins and daily routines take shape. Located in Rancho Mirage, our 10-bed residential center offers private rooms for every client. The program is based on a 21-day care model, with extensions available when clinically appropriate.

Assessment: how the right level of care is identified

Placement is based on clinical information, not guesswork. An addiction assessment uses evidence-based tools to identify whether a substance use disorder is present, determine its severity, and understand how it affects work, relationships, health, and mental well-being. It also helps guide care for co-occurring concerns, such as depression or anxiety, and determines when specific therapies should begin.

Our assessment includes:

·   A medical pre-admission review to confirm whether residential treatment is appropriate

·   A history and physical exam

·   A nursing care plan for symptom management and psychosocial support

·   A biopsychosocial assessment of biological, emotional, and social factors

·   A psychiatric evaluation to identify mood or other mental health disorders

·   A psychological screening for personality and behavioral insights

PHP and IOP: structured care while living at home

Both levels offer daily or near-daily clinical support and structured care without an overnight stay—the key difference most people consider when comparing a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) with an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Our addiction PHP program meets five days a week, and most clients participate for four to six weeks. It includes individual therapy, group therapy, holistic therapies, medication-assisted treatment through collaborating providers, education, and family counseling. PHP is often appropriate for people stepping down from inpatient care or beginning recovery with moderate to severe addiction symptoms.

Our addiction IOP program usually meets three to five days a week for a total of 9 to 15 hours. IOP is well suited for people transitioning from residential treatment or PHP, as well as professionals, caregivers, and parents who need structured support while continuing work, school, or family responsibilities.

Aftercare: support after primary treatment

Aftercare planning starts at admission, not discharge, helping ensure a smooth transition to the appropriate level of care at the right time through a personalized Go Forward Plan. Ongoing support may include PHP, IOP, outpatient therapy, sober living, and 12-step participation, with licensed clinicians offering education, encouragement, and accountability.
